Inspriational Films

Ok, so I've seen this movie before but i bought it and watched it again last night. Waltz with Bashir is a fantastic movie; The story line is interesting, the shot compositions are very well thought out and the aesthetic is really nice. The intense contrast of color and light and dark make the whole film very dramatic. Overall, it is a blend of live action, flash puppetry, traditional animation and 3d animation. A perfect blend of the three. This is the first animation documentary film that I really like.

Two movies I'm really looking forward to. They have an interesting aesthetic. I less pixarish approach. The animation is very pose to pose and the overall look is less aimed at mimicking realism. The character designs are very unique as well. They have some crazy proportions.

and some very beautiful shorts that I found.

Squirrel Kisses

Here is the progress so far on the squirrel animation. Block in one is all about done. I'm frustrated because this animation is taking soo long. It could be because being home is distracting or the fact that I worry about posing a lot more now.

The Lake

Today I went to the lake with my older brother, his wife, and my nephew. It was raining off and on and a cool breeze was blowing. Next to me was this tree growing in the pile of rocks. It would have been a really pretty area if there wasn't so much litter. I decided to leave it out of the drawing. I wanted to spend a little more time on this one since i usually do really quick sketches.
When i got back i quickly added a little color in photoshop.

Watercolor studies

Here are a couple of sketches I've done lately. They are really quick and simple. I really want to get better at watercolor technique and try to capture the simple beauties in life.

This short called Jelly Sunday is really great. The animation is simple, really squashy and stretchy and is cycled a lot. I noticed that Gobelins (the french animation school) puts out a lot of nice work, but their animation seems weird. There are no pauses, no time to rest. Everything is high pace and there is no time to let the viewer soak up the scenery or the plot. A lot of their stories involve some kind of high speed chase. Good for dynamic action, but lacking in acting and story.

Summer Break

Ok, it has been a long time but i will be soon to update. I am currently working on a 2 character animation with some silly squirrels. Im going for a much more cartoony, dynamic piece. I am also working on some watercolor studies and some new approaches to my technique.
